As per a new report, the number of Americans suffering from diabetes will nearly double in the next 25 years and the costs of treating them will become three fold.
It is expected that by the year 2034, 44.1 million Americans will be living with diabetes which is almost twice the current number of 23.7 million, as per a report which was published in the journal ‘Diabetes Care’.
Out of these, 90 percent patients are suffering from diabetes type 2 which is a version of the condition which develops over time.
The report says that the direct medical cost of treating them is expected to rrise from $113 billion annually to $336 annually.
Current health care proposals in Congress are hoping to reduce the medical costs on chronic diseases like diabetes by funding programs to prevent any disease from happening in the first place. It can also be done by making offers of incentives for those insurers and medical providers to encourage early treatment through so-called ‘accountable care organizations’.
Doctors, in such organizations, might be paid a flat fee for the treatment of a diabetes patient for a year along with bonuses if they meet certain benchmarks of patient health.
