In a new development in the notorious 'runaway acceleration' case, under which vehicle owners from all over the US and Canada are reporting that their Toyota units accelerate unintentionally, Toyota Canada is all set to send recall letter to owners of as many as 209,000 owners of its cars and trucks.
On Thursday, Toyota shared that it is all set to start a "safety improvement campaign" to ensure that appropriate changes have been made to various Toyota and Lexus models. The development has come after an extended probe with Transport Canada.
In September, Toyota had urged vehicle owners to remove the floor mats before driving, as these could slip out of place and possibly cause unintentional acceleration, but this does not seem to have solved that problem as the issue continues to grow and more reports continue to pour in.
"Although no vehicle defect has been identified, given the importance Toyota attaches to customer confidence, a safety improvement campaign will be initiated for Canadian customers", the company said.
Toyota's latest safety drive, in addition to the massive recall, includes dealers' reconfiguration of pedals for the 2007-10 Camry, Tundra and Lexus ES 350; 2005-10 Avalon and Tacoma; 2004-09 Prius and the 2006-10 IS250 and IS350. Also, the company is looking to change the shape of the floor surface of the driver's side so that there is increased space between the pedal and the floor of the three models which are reportedly "dangerous".
