In order to keep a track of suspected or confirmed cases of H1N1 flu cases, Indiana University Northwest is encouraging students and staff members to self-report cases electronically.
All staff and students on experiencing flu-like symptoms have been urged to participate in an online survey, with all information submitted kept private and confidential, only used for recording and evaluating the status of H1N1 cases on campus.
Faculty members have also been asked to report higher class absenteeism than usual via the online survey, including students being asked to report any unusual number of class cancellations via the survey.
H1N1 symptoms include a fever higher than 100 degrees; a sore throat, headache, or cough; body aches and fatigue; and nausea or gastrointestinal distress.
All campus community members have been asked to take commonsense precautions against spreading the H1N1 or seasonal flu viruses, such as, washing and sanitizing hands frequently, covering the mouth when sneezing or coughing, and staying back at home on experiencing flu-like symptoms.
In addition, the university is also offering free H1N1 vaccines for students, faculty and staff falling into high-risk categories for the influenza strain, such as, under-25s, pregnant women, including anyone between 25 and 64 at high risk due to increased susceptibility because of other chronic illnesses.
Inoculations for these priority groups to continue through 8th December, with free vaccinations available at the IUN Health and Wellness Centre.
