A total of 6 bodies, including an infant's, were found trapped inside a floatplane that took off from a B. C. island on Sunday afternoon and crashed shortly afterwards, by cost guards at Lyall Harbour on Saturna Island. The plane with bodies still inside it was found shortly before 1 pm, local time, today, and was at an 11 meters depth.
The discovery and other details have been confirmed by Troy Haddock, Maritime Coordinator for the Joint Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Victoria, who also shared that the rescue workers faced a tough time finding the wreckage because of "near-zero visibility in the water and strong currents".
The only two survivors of the crash, a male pilot and a female passenger, were rescued and transferred to the hospital a little while after the crash had happened. Locals who saw the crash saved the survivors and then raced out to help others, but the plane quickly sank into the water.
No details about the cause of the crash have been shared yet, and neither have the identity and ages of the deceased been disclosed. Mr. Haddock has shared that is too early to say what caused the crash, and an investigation will soon be carried out jointly by Transportation Safety Board and the RCMP.
While the pilot has been reported as in "serious but stable condition", the passenger is in "stable condition".
