Nintendo Wii’s Thanksgiving Week sales outpace competitors

The video game industry’s sales results from the Black Friday and the rest of the Thanksgiving week have begun to come in, with Nintendo Wii outpacing its rivals – the Sony PlayStation 3 and the Microsoft Xbox 360. While Nintendo and Sony have shared their holiday week figures, Microsoft has yet to disclose the official numbers.

Going by the Nintendo reports, more than one million Nintendo DS and Nintendo DSi portable systems were sold during the Thanksgiving week. The Wii maker has said that the most recent figures have surpassed the company’s all-time handheld hardware sales record set during the 2002 Thanksgiving Week, by Game Boy Advance.

Nintendo further said that it has sold an estimated number of over 550,000 Wii consoles during the November 22-November 28 week, thereby outselling the Sony PS3 – which reportedly sold nearly 440,000 units during the mentioned week.

Sony, nonetheless, crowed about its PS3 sales during the Thanksgiving Week, saying that this year’s figures mark a year-on-year increase. A Sony statement said: “PlayStation 3 demand was at an all time high with the system selling more than 440,000 units for the week ending 11/29/09.”

Meanwhile, though Microsoft has not yet published the Thanksgiving Week sales figures for Xbox 360, the company’s Aaron Greenberg has tweeted: “Great Black Friday results just in, biggest sales week of the year for Xbox360, more than 2xs previous week sales.”
