Twitter releases beta version of improved mobile website for preview

According to the information forwarded by micro-blogging site Twitter, the newly-released-for-preview beta version of its mobile web site has been so designed that it offers much greater functionality and is fairly similar in appearance to the real Twitter.

Inviting users to share their feedback before the mobile client is taken out of beta, Twitter elaborated that the preview version will work best on the open-source WebKit browsers, like those on iPhone, Android, Nokia S60 and Palm WebOS phones. Though the preview will also run on the BlackBerry, Twitter is yet to finish work on that platform.

In a blog post, Leland Rechis - head of user experience on the twittermobile team - said that the 'brand new' and much-improved mobile web client has been developed 'from a scratch,' using only Twitter APIs.

Rechis said: "As this preview becomes ready for prime-time, we will start switching everyone who uses 'm' in phases to automatically receive the new mobile web client. This is just the start; we're excited about the new APIs launching at Twitter, and have been busy tinkering with some neat ways to use them."

The preview of the new mobile client reflects Twitter's recognition of the fact that most Twitter users access the microblogging service via one of a number of third party mobile apps, like Twitterberry, Jtwitter, Fring, Twibble, Twitteresce, Mobio, Abiro Jitter, and TreoTwit.
