Sterilization Device Not Safe, Warns The FDA

The US Food and Drug Administration have suggested that hospitals and doctors would be better off if they refrained from using the newly modified SS1 from Steris Corp. that is used to sterilize all kinds of surgical instruments. The reason for this warning was the many reports that mentioned malfunction.

It has been reported that this modified sterilizer of the company was neither cleared to be safe nor effective. The doctors who used this sterilizer have raised concern that it could be very bad for the patients and they had a high risk of being infected due to the usage of instruments and surgical tools that are not sterile.

It has been brought to notice that the company was warned by the FDA as early as May 2008 and that they were actually supposed to be making plans to transition the customer to other products which were effective. The warning to the users was the result of the FDA being displeased with the transition tried by the company.

After the recommendation of the FDA that the doctors look for alternatives, the shares dropped by about 12.5 per cent and it is expected that Steris would take the necessary action against the company.
