As was confirmed by the company on Monday, Affymetrix Inc. and its partner TessArae have managed to win emergency approval from the US Food and Drug Administration to market their swine flu test that the firms claim can correctly identify the presence of a H1N1 virus with a single test.
The TessArray RM-Flu test was developed in association with Affymetrix, using the latter's GeneChip technology. The emergency approval will last till the declared swine flu emergency comes to an end. Currently, the end date is pegged at April 26, 2010.
As confirmed by the company, the test is administered on throat swabs which are taken from patients who are experiencing respiratory infection symptoms.
Post the announcement, shares of Affymetrix, which is involved in manufacturing of arrays to analyze genetic data, managed to climb by 3% to $5.71.
