Hazelnuts recently sold have been recalled by the Whole Foods Market, as they are suspected to be contaminated with salmonella. Stores in California, Colorado, Kansas, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah and Washington have called back their organic raw hazelnuts which were sold in bulk.
Kunze Farms of Dayton, Ore., recalled 32,950 pounds of its hazelnuts. These nuts were shipped in 25-pound cartons and labelled Kunze Farms "Select Shelled Hazelnuts" Dayton. After the federal inspectors suspected the presence of salmonella, Kunze Farms recalled all of it back. The production and distribution stopped as per this serious issue.
"Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in children, the elderly and people with weakened immune systems", FDA said.
FDA is also investigating the source of the contamination.
