After 10 people, including a newborn baby, reported thyroid problems in NSW, authorities warned against drinking Bonsoy soy milk.
Food Standards Australia (FSA) said that the product was found to contain high levels of iodine, much more than what is needed daily and this may affect the thyroid.
FSA spokeswoman Lydia Buchtmann said that required daily iodine intake is about 80-150 micrograms for adults. Testing however found that drinking just one-eighth cup of Bonsoy would exceed the daily safety limit of 1,100 micrograms. Bonsoy is imported from Japan and contains seaweed.
FSA also warned coffee shops and food outlets against using Bonsoy soy milk as it was being recalled.
Authorities stated that consuming high levels of iodine may affect the thyroid and cause people to feel generally unwell. Anybody consuming Bonsoy soy milk for a long time and feels generally unwell should consult a doctor.
Bonsoy soy milk was the only soy milk product to have high levels of iodine after conducting tests till date.
