VIVUS Inc., the biopharmaceutical firm, on Tuesday announced that it has filed a marketing application for a new drug with the US Food and Drug Administration. The drug is question is the new experimental obesity medicine Qnexa, which aims to treat obesity in patients who also suffer from hypertension, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia or central adiposity.
As confirmed by the company, the submission of the application has come after successful completion of the phase 3 of the clinical trials for the medicine, which has also included the recently announced results for EQUIP and CONQUER, the two phase 3 studies carried out for the drug.
After the clinical trials, it was revealed that patients treated with a mere three Qnexa doses managed to achieve significant weight loss as compared to patients on a placebo. Also, the medicine has managed to meet all regulations laid down by the FDA with regards to a treatment for obesity.
As revealed by the parent company, Qnexa is a oral drug, to be taken once-a-day. In addition to weight loss, the medicine also reportedly cut risk factors associated with cardiovascular diseases.
