US Born Identical Twins "Decade Apart"

The general norm is that identical twins are born minutes apart, but a pair in Florida was born has difference of a decade.

In the interesting development, the first baby, Marcello, was delivered at 11:59:37 PM on December 31, 2009, and his brother, Stephano, was delivered about a minute later at 12:00:02 AM on January 1, 2010. Marcello became the last baby to be delivered at the Tampa General Hospital in 2009.

"We never think that we would be the first of the year, or the last of the year, nothing like that, 'the twins'. But I'm really happy", the boys' father Juan Velasco said.

As confirmed by the hospital, the Velasco twins were born through an "emergency surgery".

Catherine Lynch is the name of the doctor who delivered the twins. She shared that the babies were born at 30 weeks gestation. The surgery was deemed necessary as one of the twins was not receiving as much nutrition from the placenta as his brother.

It is interesting to note that despite the fact that the babies were born just seconds apart, they will always have different birthdays. "So they'll always be twins, but now they each have their own special day," said Dr. Lynch.
