Lenovo unveiling two new ThinkPad series laptops with AMD chips

The Chinese PC maker Lenovo is unveiling two models of its sleek new ThinkPad series laptops, for which it is using microprocessors from Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) – the renowned brand that Lenovo took over in 2005 as part of a buyout deal for the PC business of International Business Machines (IBM).

Announcing the AMD Neo chips inclusion in its new ThinkPad models, Lenovo – which has thus far been using only Intel chips in its ThinkPads – said that the move will allow the company to offer lower price points for its forthcoming ThinkPad series laptops. However, it also added that it will continue to offer other ThinkPads that use Intel chips.

Going by the information put forth on the Lenovo site, the two ThinkPad laptops that will use AMD chips are - the X100e with an 11.6-inch screen; and the Edge series with a 13.3-inch screen.

While X100e is being described as Lenovo’s first “professional-grade entry ultra-portable”; the Edge series is essentially targeted at small and medium-sized businesses that generally focus more on design and aesthetics, as per information forwarded by Charles Sune, Lenovo’s segment manager for ThinkPad.

Though there has been no disclosure from Lenevo about the price-tag of the forthcoming AMD-processor ThinkPads, a Reuters report says that the X100e ThinkPad model will start at $449; the Edge series models will start at $549.
