January Designated as the Cervical Health Awareness Month

A campaign has been launched by the National Cervical Cancer Coalition against the Human Papillomavirus, which is responsible for causing one of the most common forms of cancer in women.

Cervical Cancer is the only form of cancer which is known to be caused exclusively by HPV, a common virus. Estimates say that about 4,000 women across American die of cervical cancer each year. Also, experts fear that there will be about 11,000 new cases diagnosed in the country over 2010.

As per some recent researchers carried out, high-risk HPVs might also be responsible for some cases of cancers in the mouth, head and neck in both men and women. Except for people who practice complete and lifelong abstinence, most men and women acquire HPV infection during their lifetimes.

If the infection lasts for very long, it can turn into a case of cancer, but if treated in time, these pre-cancers can be taken care of and eliminated effectively.

Starting from the age of 21, women should get regular screenings, at least once in 2 years.
