Pregnancy Ultrasounds More than Recommended

Pregnancy Ultrasounds More than Recommended

A recent Canadian study revealed that expecting mothers are getting more ultrasounds than the required limit of two, in case of non-complicated pregnancy.

Out of 1.4 million cases of pregnancies studied from 1996 to 2007, 37 percent of the pregnant women were having three or more ultrasound tests, while 20 percent were having more than four tests.

The interesting fact is that ultrasound rates were more in less complicated pregnancy cases.

Generally, one ultrasound test is recommended for each first and second trimester, in case of low risk pregnancies.

A study also shows that Ontario had spent an additional $30 million on unnecessary ultrasound tests in last 10 years.

Dr. John You, during this study, also noted that babies' deaths reduced, though ultrasound rate increased in the same period.

According to Obstetricians and Gynecologists the exposure of ultrasound rays to the fetus may cause fatal developments as serious as a miscarriage. Because during tests fluid is removed from the sac around the fetus to detect birth defects and genetic problems.

The study also looked into the year-by-year study of Ontario Health Insurance, which recorded 55 percent increase in test rates.
