Study Links Having More Kids to Reduced Suicide Risk for Mothers
As has been revealed by a new study, the more kids a mother has, the lower are her chances of having suicidal thoughts and taking her own life.
For the sake of research, the Taiwanese study analyzed data collected from over 1.2 million women over a course of 20 years.
It was discovered that there was a definite 39% decline in suicide mortality among those women who had two children, and there was a whopping 60% decrease among women with three or more kids, as compared to those women who had only one child.
As per the study, having more children might protect a woman against suicide by improving as sense of self-worth as a mother. Also, motherhood could serve to enhance social networks. In addition, children provide mothers with emotional support and give her a positive and welcomed social role.
"Clearly, women with children who are still being cared for by the mother decreases the likelihood of the mother hurting or killing herself partly because she's so emotionally invested in the children and, in a very complex way, killing herself means killing her children as well, and depriving them of a mother”, said Dr. Jon Shaw, Director and Professor of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
Details of the study have been published in the Canadian Medical Association Journal.
