High Risk of DVT in Prostate Cancer

High Risk of DVT in Prostate Cancer

A new study has revealed that prostate cancer, and a few treatments for prostate cancer, may raise dangers of developing a dangerous blood clot in men. Doctors are told to keep this threat in mind while treating men with prostate cancer.

People suffering from various types of cancer have increased risk of getting blood clots in the deep veins of their legs, which is known as deep vein thrombosis, or DVT.

A DVT can be risky, since it may move to the lungs and cause a life-threatening blockage, called a pulmonary embolism. DVTs are said to form when somebody is not able to get up and move around. It could also be linked with cancer treatments.

According to, an earlier study, DVT is quite common after hormone treatment for prostate cancer. But doctors are not yet clear on whether it’s because of the treatment, or the cancer.

It is said that even women taking contraceptive pills, which contains the female hormone oestrogen, can somewhat raise the risk of a DVT.

Risks of developing a DVT are found to be the highest for men who have undergone hormone treatment, compared with active observation or other treatments.

Men whose cancer had spread around the body had higher risks of a DVT or blood clot in the lungs, compared with men whose cancer had not spread.
