Sweet Biscuits Risk Health of Children as it contains Toxic Salt
Health campaigners have warned that children who consume sweet treats such as Hobnobs and luxury cookies are at higher health risk because they are more salty than popcorn and chicken nuggets. They fuel a toxic daily overdose of salt in children.
Consumption of too much salt is linked to high blood pressure and likelihood of a stroke. These diseases lead to thousands of early deaths every year.
Consensus Action of Salt and Health has expressed concerns over increased consumption of salt through processed food without realizing it. Biscuits are one of the examples that fall under that category.
It was revealed by the survey that more than 110 popular biscuits were saltier than Butterkist Salted Popcorn.
The health group has blamed manufacturers and supermarkets for high content of salt in biscuit recipes that risk public health.
The survey suggested that on an average, children eat 46 packets of biscuits every year, which puts them at a higher risk of suffering from high blood pressure later in life.
Professor Graham MacGregor, the CASH chairman and Professor of Cardiovascular Medicine at Queen Mary, University of London said that it becomes very difficult for parents to stop their children from eating sweet foods containing too much salt.
He added, "Manufacturers of biscuits need to remove the large and unnecessary amounts of salt that they put into biscuits".
