At an Automotive Press Association luncheon at the Detroit Athletic Club earlier this week, the finalists for the prestigious 2014 `North American Car and Truck/SUV of the Year' award were revealed by the jurors responsible for the award.

The three finalists from each category - the `Car' category and the `Truck/SUV' category - were announced by the group of 48 automotive journalists from the 2014 North American Car and Truck/SUV of the Year awards, on Monday.

The finalists have been selected from an October-announced shortlist of 24 cars, trucks and SUVs. The award is scheduled to be handed out on January 13, 2014, before the opening of the North American International Auto Show in Detroit.

For the 2014 North American Car of the Year award, the three finalists are: the 2014 Cadillac CTS, the 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray and the 2014 Mazda 3. And, the three finalists for the 2014 North American Truck/SUV of the Year award are: the Acura MDX, the Chevrolet Silverado and the Jeep Cherokee.

With three of the six finalists being General Motors' vehicles, the automaker is apparently the odds-on favorite to win at least one of the two awards.

About GM's 50 percent share of the finalists' list, GM North America president Mark Reuss said: "This is proof we're on the right track. It's gratifying to see the experts agree that we're offering customers one of the strongest lineups of cars and trucks available on the market."
