3 dead, 5 sickened after eating Thanksgiving meal in California: officials confirm
Three people died and five others fell sick after eating a Thanksgiving meal provided by a San Francisco Bay Area church, authorities confirmed.
The questionable meal was prepared by Golden Hills Community Church at Antioch's American Legion Hall. All the eight people were rushed to Sutter Delta Medical Center at different times between Friday and Saturday with apparently food borne illnesses.
Three people died, and one person is still receiving treatment in the hospital. The remaining four people were treated and released.
However, it remains uncertain if the victims fell sick after eating the diner at the church or at the assisted living facility where they all resided. A total of 835 people ate the meal but other people didn't show any signs of illness.
Victoria Balladares, a spokesperson for the Contra Costa County Health Services, said, "If it were a food borne outbreak, we'd expect to see a lot more people getting sick."
All the victims were elderly and lived the same unidentified assisted living facility. The incident is still under investigation by the county's public health & environmental health officials.
