GM sells over 20,000 Ultium-based EVs in U.S. in Q2 2024
American automobile giant General Motors (GM) achieved a remarkable milestone in second quarter (Q2) of 2024, as sales of its Ultium-based electric vehicles (EVs) surpassed the mark of 20,000 units for the first time. As per released stats, GM sold a total of 21,930 EVs in the April through June quarter, representing an increase of 40 per cent year-over-year. The positive trend echoes the increasing adoption of the company’s new Ultium-based electric models. Out of the total EVs delivered in the most recent quarter, 20,556 (roughly 94 per cent) were Ultium-based battery-powered vehicles. It was the first time when the company sold a 5-digit number of Ultium EVs. In Q1 2024, the volume was recorded at 9,385. The figures are enough to prove that the Ultium family of models is eventually taking off.
This is really remarkable, especially as the automaker is moving away from the Chevrolet Bolt EV and EUV duo and ramping up production of its Ultium family of vehicles.
The sales results include electric car deliveries from GM’s four brands, viz. Chevrolet, Cadillac, GMC, and BrightDrop (a commercial EV brand). In its report, GM stated that its various brands attracted customers from several rival brands.
The Cadillac Lyriq once again emerged as the automobile giant’s best-selling Ultium-based model. The Lyriq, a battery-electric mid-size luxury crossover SUV, set a new quarterly record by selling 7,294 units, up 441 per cent year-over-year. Overall, it became the best-selling EV of the automaker.
Chevrolet delivered a total of 11,217 EVs during the April through June quarter of this year, down 20 per cent year-over-year, which accounts for 2.5 per cent of the brand’s total sales. The given figure includes a considerable number of the Chevrolet Blazer EVs (6,634).
The GMC Hummer electric pickup truck and SUV duo attracted 2,929 buyers in Q2 2024, and nearly 70 per cent of those buyers were new to the company. Finally, the BrightDrop electric van recorded 490 deliveries, up 64 per cent year-over-year.
GM’s impressive quarterly performance emphasized by record-breaking sales of Ultium-based EVs underscores the automobile giant’s successful transition from conventional vehicles to EVs. The company’s new models, such as the Cadillac Lyric and Chevrolet Blazer EV, are attracting significant consumer interest. As the automaker continues to expand its EV lineup and production capabilities, it is widely expected to achieve its ambitious sales target for this year and beyond.
