Reddit launches a new block tool for its users to deal with abusive content

San Francisco based entertainment and social news website Reddit has launched a new block feature for its users on Wednesday. While previous block feature provided the authority to its users to block anyone in their private messages, the new block feature provides the universal blocking option on the website. Now the users can remove replies, posts, comments and messages of another user, from their view by blocking his profile.

Any use with admin or moderator priveleges, can see the blocked user’s content, while the normal user cannot see the content after blocking any user on Reddit. That blocked user will become invisible for them on the website completely.

Reddit engineer Christopher Slowe informed that the idea for mods was that since there’s already a way to ban users from subreddits if the whole mod team agrees, they did not want to create a situation where all of the mods independently block the user, leading to confusion.

The company started the controversial changes to its site by banning many abusive & offensive subreddits, in June last year. This was a big move for the company which has always advocated for free speech in its communities.

After few months, Reddit launched a new block tool for its users.
